Tour Description
From whisky to smoked salmon to fried Mars bars, Scottish food is often stereotyped. On this 3-hour Edinburgh Food Tour we'll deconstruct those stereotypes and examine many of the ways Scotland is pushing forward its cuisine while adhering to traditional practices. Led by a chef or food writer, this tour gives us insider access to some of the city’s top food shops, where we'll meet shop owners, taste artisanal products, and discover some of the best-kept secrets of Scottish culinary traditions.
Edinburgh Food Tour
Our walk travels through the up-and-coming area of Stockbridge, stopping in at a select group of food shops and market stands, depending on the season and the day of the week. We may visit Scotland’s oldest and most famous specialist deli and wine merchant, to discuss the influence that Italian immigrants had and still have in determining the taste of Edinburgh.
We may stop in the first independent coffee shop in Edinburgh, to savor some of the locally roasted beans and learn about the renaissance of good coffee in the city. We could have a look at this season's wild game in the window of a real butcher shop or slip inside to taste some game pies. In the market, we may taste some of the hot and cold smoked salmon, haddock, trout, and seafood from an award-winning smokehouse.
Eating Edinburgh
Along the way, we will examine how all of these products fit into the Scottish diet, its culinary traditions, and approaches. We may also discuss how poverty and wealth have influenced Scottish ways of eating and drinking, as well as how Edinburgh and its surrounding areas are becoming a center for fine dining and food trends. At the end of the walk, we should have an excellent foundation in Scottish gastronomy and be better prepared to appreciate some of the finer points of Edinburgh's food scene for the remainder of our trip.
